Blending age-old expertise with innovation, Groupe Beau Vallon has extended its sugar operations to embrace diversified and sustainable agriculture. Emphasizing short supply chains and sustainable practices, the group is dedicated to addressing climate change through producing biomass from cultivated forests, serving as a renewable energy source for generating environmentally friendly electricity.
Sugarcane is deeply ingrained in the identity of Groupe Beau Vallon. At the heart of the property lie historical remnants of the Group: an old stone chimney, the buildings of the former Beau Vallon and Riche en Eau sugar factories, witnesses to an era when Mauritius thrived on sugarcane.
With 1,800 hectares under sugarcane cultivation, fully mechanised, the Group has been one of the country’s most efficient producers for many years. It notably stands out as one of the main suppliers of sugarcane to Omnicane’s La Baraque factory.
With a heritage spanning over two centuries, Groupe Beau Vallon has expanded its sugar operations into diversified agriculture, including the cultivation of potatoes, onions, carrots, vegetables, and palm hearts, as well as the management of nurseries, orchards, and extensive deer farming. The Group is one of the country’s foremost potato producers, yielding 1,500 tonnes annually.
Mindful of environmental and health issues, Groupe Beau Vallon strives to find a better balance between production, the use of agrochemicals, biodiversity conservation, and consumer health. Responsible and sustainable agriculture pratices are privileged, thus ensuring quality products for consumers.
With 200 hectares under cultivation, Groupe Beau Valon owns the largest eucalyptus plantation on the island. These eucalyptus forests act as carbon sinks and are intended for biomass production, which is a source of renewable energy for electricity generation in thermal power plants and boilers throughout the island.
